Knock knees

Knock Knees

Genu valgum is more commonly referred to as knock-knee

When someone with genu valgum stands with their knees together, there is a gap between the ankles of about 8 cm(3.1 inches) or more. The knees will appear to push in toward each other.

It is most common in children, typically affecting 3- to 6-year-olds. In most young children, the condition will naturally correct itself by age 7 years.

The condition is slightly more common in girls, though boys can develop it too .

In rare cases, genu valgum may continue into adolescence. In other cases, older children or adults may develop .

The prevalence of genu varumand genu valgum was 8.6% and 10.0%, respectively. There was a significant adverse correlation between the Q angle and BMI.

Causes

  • The major cause of knock knees is deficiency of Vitamin D in these children. Vitamin D helps in calcium absorption and assimilation of calcium in the bones, making them strong.
